Many in the LGBTQ community insist “inequality of care” is real and continues to persist. Many in this patient population claim that not many healthcare professionals know their unique needs. It is also a known fact that members of the LGBTQ community are at higher risk for certain physical and mental health conditions. This course intends to review all the special needs of the LGBTQ patient population so we may better serve them.
Learning Objectives The LGBTQ Patient Population:
- Review of perceived biases of LGBTQ patients.
- Delineate gender identity vs. sexual orientation.
- Acknowledge the unique physical and mental healthcare needs of LGBTQ patients.
- Explore the unique healthcare needs of gay, lesbian and transgender patients.
- Acknowledge the LGBTQ patients can be victims or discrimination and violence, and may need referral for mental health assistance.
- Acknowledge that LGBTQ patients have special healthcare needs and healthcare providers need continuing special training to address their needs.
