Elder abuse and neglect is a basic topic in nursing programs. This topic is reviewed repeatedly in nursing school and when you start working as a nurse. There are no clear statistics to this but sources have indicated that 5 to 10% of the elderly experience some form of abuse. This course will review the different types of abuse. Very often the patient will not admit to the abuse but the care provider should be observant of some signs. Nurses are mandatory reporters, i.e. if there is any suspicion that the patient is being abused, this has to be reported to the appropriate people or agency for proper investigation.
