Respite care generally means a short-term break for caregivers. Caregivers who take care of patients with general debility, those who are unable to take care of themself and totally depend on others for their care, can become burned out, as it is usually a 24-hour job. Respite care is meant to give these caregivers some relief, so they can find time for themself.
